How I work

I work with many families with young and adolescent children. I provide help and support with normal parenting challenges, parenting teens, changes in families such as relocation, school transitions, divorce and issues in the wider family, OCD, and trauma related to previous difficult experiences.

I provide a confidential space where we can look together at your family history, patterns which repeat down the generations, and examine practical solutions to immediate problems. I work in a focussed manner, seeing my clients every 2, 3 or 4 weeks and usually over several months. This is different from the psychoanalytic model, or individual weekly psychotherapy, and means that it is both solution focused and cost effective.

Talking to someone outside your family can often highlight exactly what is causing your current issues, and I can offer confidential and unbiased feedback to you. This often helps with communication within families and specifically between parents and children. I also have extensive experience working with young people with anxiety and eating disorders and how these impact not only the sufferer but the rest of the family as well.

I build on the resources and talents in families which often leads to the family being able to find their own solutions to seemingly intractable problems.

I also work with Individuals who find Family Therapy helpful, presenting an opportunity to reflect on the context of their current situation and the important relationships in their lives.

You may suspect that one of your children has ASD (autistic spectrum disorder), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), or ADD (attention deficit disorder), and it is often difficult to get a definitive diagnosis due to long waiting times for assessments. I can help you by looking in detail at what you see in your child's presentation and how you and the rest of your family can help to manage these, both for your child or adolescent and for the rest of your family.

How does the therapy programme work?

I start with a 90-minute assessment session to get to know you and some of your family history. After this I will offer sessions at your convenience, probably every 2 or 3 weeks, working on the principle that much of the change happens between sessions. Subsequent sessions generally last 60 - 75 minutes.

I work from my own consulting room and sessions are confidential. I can work with different configurations of family members according to what will be most helpful.

I prefer to start with face-to-face sessions but I can also offer remote sessions on Zoom if that is more convenient.
